1) Alibaba Trade Assurance โ The Beginner's Armor
How it works: the buyer pays Alibaba (not the supplier). Funds sit protected. The supplier ships; buyer raises issues within the TA-covered window if goods deviate from the written contract. Money moves only per the dispute outcome.
- โ Kill two toys with one stick: the TA contract you write becomes your spec document โ require it to embed your spec sheet, packaging list, and inspection clause.
- โ ๏ธ Common trap: suppliers ask to "leave TA to save fees" and pay via T/T instead โ the moment you agree, you exit the armor. For first orders, hold the line.
- ๐ฐ Fee reality (2026): buyer pays $0; supplier absorbs ~2.68% (some pass a little into unit price โ still cheapest insurance available for new relationships).
2) 30/70 T/T โ The Standard for Real Relationships
Structure: 30% deposit at PI signing confirms and schedules production; 70% balance payable only after a PASSED pre-shipment inspection (PSI), before goods ship.
- Write the trigger condition into the PI: "70% balance due within 3 working days after buyer's PSI report shows AQL 2.5/4.0 PASS."
- Never accept "balance before shipment but before inspection" phrasing โ that's a 100%-upfront trap wearing a hat. The inspection must precede the balance, full stop.
- Bank account check: the receiving account should match the PI-issuing company. If funds route to a mismatched "export agent" account, require: PI issued by licensed factory + written statement naming the agent + copy of their agency agreement (as done in our $4,200 case study).
3) Letter of Credit (L/C) at Sight โ For Big Orders
A bank-issued promise: payment releases when conforming documents (B/L, invoice, inspection cert) present, independent of supplier's claims. Best from $20-30k upward or with suppliers you haven't audited deeply.
- โ Structured, bank-verified, hard to fudge โ the most "institutional" safety.
- โ Fees 0.5-1.5%, amendment costs when specs change mid-flight, and document discipline is unforgiving (typos can strand payment). Use a good trade-finance banker.
4) PayPal Goods & Services โ Samples & First Contact
- โ The chargeback window (~180 days) and straightforward disputes make it ideal for $20-$2,000 ranges (samples, small trials).
- โ Suppliers often refuse (chargebacks cut both ways) or add 4-5% surcharge to cover the fee โ acceptable on samples, painful at scale.
- โ ๏ธ Always send as Goods & Services, never "Friends & Family" ("F&F strips ALL protection"). If a supplier insists F&F, treat it as a red flag.
5) Wise Business (and similar multi-currency rails)
- โ Cheapest mainstream channel for verified-repeat relationships: 0.4-1.2% all-in transfers, transparent FX mid-market, quick 1-3 day settlement.
- โ Zero inherent buyer protection โ it's a rail, not an escrow. Only as safe as the PI + inspection discipline behind it.
- ๐ก Pairing rule we use: Wise for the 30% deposit; nothing until PSI pass; then Wise for 70%. Cost-efficient and gated by your own QC.
6) and 7) What About WeChat / Alipay โ and Why WU/Crypto Is Never OK
WeChat Pay/Alipay: these are domestic Chinese rails. Foreigners occasionally use linked international cards for small in-country expenses (hotels, taxis) via their own setup โ fine. But never pay a production order through a supplier's personal QR code: no international dispute path, no business invoice, and it's the standard vector of the "personal account deposit" scams we logged here.
Western Union / MoneyGram / crypto-to-individual-wallets: instantaneous, irreversible, name-only verification. Every single one of the "vanishing deposit" stories we collected involves one of these. If a supplier's payment menu includes WU/crypto "for convenience," walk.
The 6 PI Payment Clauses We Always Require (Copy These)
- 30% deposit upon PI signature via [method]; 70% within 3 business days after PSI PASS (AQL 2.5/4.0) by [named third-party inspector].
- All payments to: [full legal company name + bank account]. Any account change requires a new PI signed by both parties.
- Prices fixed in USD for 30 days from PI date. (Kills FX re-open games โ see the FX trap in our case study.)
- Sample reference: production must match golden sample [serial/photo set] within written tolerances (ยฑ5% cosmetic, 0% safety/fit).
- Defect replacement: defects beyond AQL tolerance = free replacement or credit on next order, supplier's freight.
- Delay clause: production delay > [7] days past agreed schedule (excluding force majeure) = [1-2]% order value credit per additional week, capped at [5]%.
Fraud Vectors by Channel (What Each Is Actually Exposed To)
| Channel | Main fraud vector | Primary countermeasure |
|---|---|---|
| Trade Assurance | Goods-vs-contract nitpicks; TA-window expiry games | Embed full spec + inspection standard inside TA contract; photograph everything on arrival day |
| 30/70 T/T | Account substitution ("boss empty account"); inspection dodging | Account-match rule in PI; inspection firm booked directly by you, not supplier-recommended |
| L/C | Document fraud (fake B/Ls) โ rare but exists | ICNo. verification + reputable advising bank |
| PayPal | F&F bait; partial-ship disputes | Always G&S; keep shipment proof; no partial releases |
| Wise | All pressure to skip PSI + "urgent balance" | Your inspection gate is the lock โ never skip it for anyone |
| WeChat/Alipay personal | Everything; identity fake is trivial | Not for production, ever |
| WU/MG/Crypto | Vanishing deposits, 100% of time | "No" is a complete sentence |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Trade Assurance really safe for first orders?
It's the strongest beginner protection available โ but only if funds actually flow through TA (not bank transfer "to save fees") and your TA contract embeds the full spec + inspection standard. Our full breakdown including the contract text to require is in section 1 above.
Is Wise safe for paying Chinese suppliers?
Wise is a regulated transfer rail with good FX and low fees โ but it provides zero buyer protection itself. It's ideal after you have a verified supplier and a PI with a PSI-gated 30/70 structure. Never use any transfer rail (Wise included) as a substitute for an inspection gate.
What does "30/70 payment terms" mean?
30% of order value as deposit at PI signing; 70% balance before shipment โ and proper wording makes that balance conditional on a passed pre-shipment inspection.Without the PSI condition, 30/70 gracefully degrades into "100% risk on you" before cargo moves.
Should I ever pay 100% upfront?
Practically never for production orders. The only routine exception: tiny sample fees ($20-$80) where PayPal G&S covers you. Anything "100% upfront to lock capacity" is either a cash-flow plea or a scam pattern โ both are counters you can negotiate around.
